Usman Khan Amazing Century Helps Pakistan Shaheens Win Against Perth Scorchers
In a super exciting opener of the Top End T20 series2024, the Pakistan Shaheens celebrated a 17-run win over the Perth Scorchers at the DXC Arena in Darwin. What a game it was! Usman Khan hit a fantastic century, & the bowlers from the Shaheens really stepped up, putting them on a great path for this series.
A Game Full of Standout Moments
Choosing to bat first, Pakistan Shaheens aimed high with a solid total of 188-7. Usman Khan played a crucial role, scoring an exciting 57 runs off just 35 balls! He hit four boundaries and three big sixes, pulling his team together when they were struggling at 58-3. Teaming up with captain Mohammad Haris, who added a handy 25 runs, Usman helped build a strong partnership of 45 runs that was so important for setting a total they could defend.
As they kept batting, Arafat Minhas chipped in with a quickfire 31 runs off 16 balls near the end. Then Mohammad Abbas Afridi finished strong too, smashing two sixes in the last over to push their score even higher. Even though Matthew Spoors bowled well for the Scorchers & took three key wickets, it just wasn’t enough to handle the total put up by the Shaheens.
Perth Scorchers Try Hard But Come Up Short
Going for a tricky target of 189 runs, the Perth Scorchers hit some bumps early. They lost both their openers—Teague Wyllie (4) & Sam Fanning (13)—in the first four overs! That put them in a tough spot. Joel Curtis (17) & Corey Wasley (54) did try to fight back and made a nice partnership of 58 runs for the fourth wicket. Wasley’s aggressive innings had six fours and three sixes but it ended when Jahandad Khan took him down in the 12th over.
As the run rate climbed to about 11.29, the middle order didn’t give up easily. Baxter Holt (24) & Keaton Critchell (24) combined well for another boost with their 33-run partnership for the fifth wicket. But then Holt got out due to Mohammad Abbas Afridi in the 16th over, which was really disappointing for them. Even though Matthew Spoors fought back hard with an unbeaten 27 runs off just 15 balls, it wasn’t enough to reach their target; they missed it by 17 runs.
Shaheens’ Bowlers Shine Bright
The bowlers from Shaheens definitely stole the show! Both Mohammad Abbas Afridi & Jahandad Khan grabbed two wickets each while Mohammad Imran Jnr & Arif Yaqoob picked one each as well. Their smart bowling and strong performance during those crucial death overs kept the Scorchers from catching up, making it tough for them to reach that target.
