Dinesh Chandimal Rises to the Occasion, with a ‘Bit of Luck’ on His Side

He came to bat early because Pathum Nissanka got out soon. “I had to go in right after Pathum was out, but my goal was to play positively,” he said after the match. The pitch was much better than in the first Test, which gave Chandimal more confidence. “The pitch helped a lot; it’s way better than the last one,” he mentioned, showing how he adjusted to the changes during play.

As the match went on and New Zealand’s spinners started taking over, Chandimal showed he could shift his game style too. He zipped to 41 runs off just 42 balls but then slowed down a bit to reach his first fifty after an extra 37 balls. “In Galle, it’s easier when seamers bowl and when everything isn’t so spread out,” he explained, sharing his smart approach throughout his innings.
Being able to adapt was super important for him here. It helped him deal with New Zealand’s bowling attack while being real about how luck plays a part in cricket sometimes. He admitted, “You need some luck like an edge going through,” showing how much he understands the game and its quirks.

Importantly, this inning was actually Chandimal’s first century batting at No. 3 a spot he didn’t often play through his career. “I’ve mostly batted at number five, but I had to think about what’s good for the team,” he said. Not everything went perfect for him though; there was a run-out due to some mix-up with Dimuth Karunaratne. But Chandimal owned up to it completely and highlighted how important clear communication is on the field. “I told Dimuth I’m sorry as soon as I came off for tea,” he shared showing great respect and teamwork among them.
