Overview of the Champions One Day Cup 2024Get ready! The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is all for the Champions One-Day Cup 2024. It’s a big 50-over cricket tournament that’s gonna show off the best players in Pakistan. From September 12 to September 29, 2024, it’ll happen in Faisalabad. Expect some thrilling games with high stakes and excitement through its single-league format & important playoff matches.
Captains and Provisional Squads Announced The PCB just shared who will be captains & provisional squads for all five teams playing in the tournament. These captains were picked by team mentors. They are legends in Pakistani cricket:
- Misbah-ul-Haq (Wolves)
- Saqlain Mushtaq (Panthers)
- Sarfaraz Ahmed (Dolphins)
- Shoaib Malik (Stallions)
- Waqar Younis (Lions)
Team Captains:
- Dolphins: Saud Shakeel, who is also Pakistan’s Test vice-captain
- Lions: Shaheen Shah Afridi, a past captain of Pakistan T20I
- Panthers: Shadab Khan, former vice-captain for white-ball games
- Stallions: Mohammad Haris, captain of Pakistan Shaheens
- Wolves: Mohammad Rizwan, ex-all-format vice-captain
Each team was made after a draft from a pool of 150 players picked for their fitness & recent performance.
Tournament Format & Schedule
The Champions One-Day Cup will follow a single-league format. Each team will play against every other one once. Most matches kick off at 3 PM local time. But there’s an exception! The Lions vs. Panthers game on September 16 starts at 9:30 AM. In the end, three big playoff matches take place over four days, wrapping up with the big final on September 29.

24 Sep: Qualifier (Team No. 1 vs. Team No. 2)
25 Sep: Eliminator 1 (Team No. 3 vs. Team No. 4)
27 Sep: Eliminator 2 (Losing Qualifier vs. Winning Eliminator 1)
29 Sep: Final
All matches will be held at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad, giving everyone a consistent spot to enjoy the games.
Provisional Squads & Notable AbsencesEvery team’s squad mixes contracted players with other top stars from cricket. Here are the provisional squads:
Dolphins: Saud Shakeel (captain), Faheem Ashraf, Sarfaraz Ahmed, & others.
Lions: Shaheen Shah Afridi (captain), Abdullah Shafique, Imam-ul-Haq, & others.
Panthers: Shadab Khan (captain), Saim Ayub, Usama Mir, & others.
Stallions: Mohammad Haris (captain), Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, & others.
Wolves: Mohammad Rizwan (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah, & others.
Some centrally contracted players can’t join due to personal reasons or other commitments like Mohammad Nawaz and Imad Wasim so they’ll miss out this time around.
Key Player Updates
A few athletes are coming back after getting fit again! Look out for Hunain Shah for Lions and Sameen Gul along with Sufiyan Moqim for Dolphins. Oh! And Shahnawaz Dahani is playing for Wolves too! Meanwhile, nine domestic contracted players didn’t make the squads ’cause they failed fitness tests showing how important being fit is for this tournament.
